So a karaoke singer could be said, depending on your outlook, to be pretending to be able to sing. Let that console you next time a really off-key bard rolls Elvis over in his grave.
Incidentally, since our story last spring on Korean karaoke parlors, we've had a couple of readers wonder what Koreans call them (because the word 'karaoke' doesn't always get a reaction over the phone). The Korean phrase is 'no-rae-bang' - literally 'music studio,' as in a recording room or practice space. This is absolutely the last time this subject will be covered in this column. Cross our heart and devoutly hope to die.
